My interests are very interdisciplinary, involving individual based modeling, sociological research, and scientific outreach. My Master’s and PhD research are focused on basking sharks in Ireland, with a focus on how we can better understand their behavior to shape more effective conservation policy.

I am interested in water pollutants, water quality, and wastewater. Through my research project or thesis, I want to learn more about water, whether it be learning more about wastewater or drinking water treatment in different countries, exploring the policies related to contaminants of emerging concern, or better understanding sustainable water practices.

Cindy recruits, trains and oversees a team of 25-30 Field Interpreters each semester. Their role is to engage and inspire middle schoolers through inquiry-driven, outdoor hands-on land use, water chemistry and biodiversity activities. Youth collect and identify invertebrates, and take the pulse of stream or lake using probeware and test kits, to determine the overall health of their watershed. Since 2009, over 250 Mason Field Interpreters have directly connected with over 100,000 youth, who in turn, will become our future natural resource protectors.

Training Students to Communicate Science To The Public

Dr. Smith oversees graduate student Chelsea Gray, who films students as they reflect on their learning experiences. She helps guide students in the framing and messagings, to craft engaging stories about their research and experience.
